Anime Challenge Day 3

Anime Challenge Day 3

Day 3 of the 30 Day Anime Challenge is here! Today, the challenge is “Your Anime Crush.” I’m not gonna lie. This one was pretty rough. There have been so many characters that I’ve come across that I just adore, especially as of late. Whether, she’s a distant princess who has a heart under her icy exterior or a certain maid that stole the anime community’s heart by storm, it was tough to choose. However, I have chosen, and it is none other than the Ice Queen, from My Teen Romantic Comedy: SNAFU.

Yukino Yukinoshita

Now, for starters, SNAFU is about a group of teens that join a club in school to help their peers with their problems, no matter how trivial. The lone member of this before the main character joins is the Ice Queen, Yukino. She feels it’s her mission in life to help others with their problems. I can’t praise this show enough for its realistic portrayals of relationships, drama and human beings in general. This is easily one of my top ten anime all-time, so I guess it’s only natural one of my crushes (well, my top crush) is from this anime.

Now, why do I like her? Well, that’s a tricky question to answer. She is beautiful, rich, cold, unfriendly and closed off. She’s often seen as haughty and superior. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have her positive traits, because she does, it’s just, unlike with most other anime characters (or anime in general) her positive features aren’t spotlighted with every scene she’s in. She is beautiful and highly intelligent, but her ability to express herself and emotions is pretty underwhelming. Her interpersonal relationships are lacking, so she struggles with making meaningful connections with others her age. Even despite all this, there’s something she says that just solidified my love for her:

“People aren't all perfect. They're weak, ugly, and they get jealous and try to bring others down. Oddly enough, the better you are, the harder it is to live. That's why I'm going to change this world and the people in it...”

How can you not like a character who has beliefs like that? She’s beautiful, an avid reader, intelligent and struggles with forming relationships. I’m aware that she is blunt, cold and often closed off, but when she begins to open up, and shows kindness and compassion, or at least her version of it, I can’t help but smile.
