Anime Challenge Day 6

Anime Challenge Day 6

So, Day 6: Most annoying anime character. Honestly, my choice for this one caught me by surprise. I had planned on going for someone other than the person I eventually chose, but the more I thought about him, the more annoying he became. Ladies and gents...

Sasuke Uchiha

I know what you're thinking: Sasuke? Weilder of sharingan and rinnegan Sasuke? That Sasuke? Yes, that's the one. Now, I think I should tell you a little about my journey with good ole Sasuke, because I didn't always find him annoying. Quite the opposite actually; he was my favorite character from the Naruto franchise for the longest... Then I had a talk with a friend about his powers and how he came into them.

For those that don't know, Sauske is the best friend/rival of Naruto, the titular character of the Naruto anime. They were rivals for as long as the show ran, but the friendship underlying that rivalry was one-sided for most of the show, what with Sasuke being driven by nothing more than revenge. You see, his older brother killed every other member of their clan,  and Sasuke vowed vengeance, and could only get said vengeance if he became stronger than his brother in order to kill him.

This quest for revenge is what attracted me to his character, apart from his distant, arrogant attitude (I have a soft spot for assholes it seems), and the darker his path grew, the more I liked him. But, during a somewhat recent conversation with a friend, I had something pointed out to me that changed the way I looked at this character I all but grew up loving.

He didn't work for his power.

Virtually every upgrade in strength Sasuke got, it was either gifted to him or he stole it. Once I learned this, I couldn't help but look at his attitude, words and actions as little more than those of a shameless cheater. He's said on more than one occasion that the only thing that mattered to him was killing his brother, and I could respect his drive, but the more time that passed, the colder he grew to those who wanted to help him, and the stronger he grew (while not actually working for that power), the more of an annoyance he grew to be for me. While I can enjoy a headstrong, stubborn and generally asshole-ish character, I can't stand people who spit in the face of those who genuinely want to help. And he did this countless times over the course of the anime, including almost killing one of his closest friends, and trying his hardest to kill the other more than once. I mean, I can understand not wanting help, but wholeheartedly trying to murder your closets friends? Nah man.

Sasuke is selfish, arrogant (when he didn't even earn the power he has), and stubborn to a fault. How can you not find someone like that annoying? I'll admit, he does look baddass most of the time though...
